Elfcup

"Elfcup" explores British mushrooms combined with the human form. Emma is interested in respresenting our connection with nature and purposefully chose native mushrooms as both an educational tool and as an inspiration for integrating nature back into our local spaces. She first sculpted a clay figure using references from a female model, the body was then used as a framework to build the mushrooms around. for this project Emma removed the use of moulds and experimented with air drying clays to reduce waste in the sculpture making process.

Emma researched a variety of different mushroom species and experimented with different clays, paints, and varnishes to recreate them. She enjoyed grouping them together and placing them around the sculpture, using the body as a canvas for mushrooms. This resulted in a variety of mushrooms grouped into different colours, textures and forms growing around a central figure.
